History
Albay is a resilient and culturally rich province in the Philippines’ Bicol Region, defined by the iconic, near-perfect cone of Mayon Volcano, which has historically shaped its landscape, economy, and identity. Originally a prosperous pre-colonial settlement known as Ibat, it evolved through centuries of Spanish colonization starting in 1569, becoming a distinct province in 1636 that survived catastrophic volcanic events like the 1814 eruption. Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, celebrated for its deep-rooted Bicolano heritage, agricultural productivity in abaca and coconut, and its transformation into a major hub for eco-tourism and disaster risk reduction.
Highlights
- Mayon Volcano
: An active stratovolcano world-renowned for its “perfect cone” symmetry. Its name is derived from the Bicolano word magayon, meaning “beautiful”.
- Cagsawa Ruins
: The remains of a 16th-century Franciscan church that was destroyed during Mayon’s most violent eruption in 1814. Only the belfry (bell tower) remains standing as a symbol of Bicolano resilience.
- Bicol Express
: A popular local dish characterized by its spicy flavor, made with pork, chilies (sili), and coconut milk (gata).
- Pinangat
: A savory specialty from the town of Camalig. It is made by wrapping taro leaves, chili, meat, and coconut milk into small pouches and simmering them.
- Pili Nuts: A premium nut native to the region, often candied or roasted and sold as Albay’s most popular food souvenir (pasalubong).
- Abaca (Manila Hemp): A strong natural fiber extracted from a species of banana tree. Albay is a major producer, using it to create world-class bags, mats, and footwear.
- Ibalong Epic: An ancient Bicolano legend depicting the bravery of three heroes (Baltog, Handiong, and Bantong) celebrated every August through the Ibalong Festival.
- Sili Ice Cream
: A uniquely Albayano dessert that features scorching chili integrated into creamy ice cream, often available in varying levels of spiciness.
- ATV Lava Trails: Adventure tours where visitors ride all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) through rugged, solidified lava flows and volcanic debris left by past eruptions.
- Tiwi Pottery
: A centuries-old industry in the town of Tiwi using local red clay to create intricate ceramics, influenced by the geography of Mount Mayon.
