History
Aklan is the oldest province in the Philippines, established as a distinct entity in 1213 by settlers from Borneo and officially inaugurated as a modern province in 1956. Located in the Western Visayas, it is defined by its deep spiritual roots and its role as the gateway to the world-famous Boracay Island. Historically, it served as a center of the “Kalantiao” legend and was a vital part of the Panay Confederation. Today, Aklan is a premier global tourism destination, a UNESCO-recognized hub for intangible cultural heritage, and a major producer of fine textiles, blending a peaceful agricultural lifestyle with international prestige.
